I will agree that the closer your hands are to the clubhead, the more control you will have. However, in golf the one thing that helps if you don’t grip the club down to far is leverage.
Grip the club about one inch from the top of the grip and your chip shots will fly a little higher and land a little softer.
That type of control is what you won’t have by gripping the club low. Gripping it low makes the club shorter and thus hits the ball very low and will cause the ball to roll a lot.
If you want the ball to roll more than that is the way to do it. If not, for control and height off the clubface, grip it a little higher.
