In a lot of golf swings, the right elbow is the part of the body that many people are unsure where it “fits.” This is very true, but there’s also a very simple solution.
Like many aspects to the golf swing, the secret lies in the set up. If you set up with the right elbow slightly flexed and in tight with your mid-section, it will naturally fall into place.
Where is that, you ask? During the backswing, let the elbow slide back across your rib cage until your backswing is approximately 50 percent completed. Then just let the right elbow fold and continue the backswing until your hands are opposite your head and the forearm is pointing down to the ground. Squeeze your elbows together to make sure the forearm is pointing where it should be. The last thing you want is the dreaded “chicken wing,” where your elbow is pointed out away from your body instead of down toward the ground.
Remember the old adage that the right elbow need be tucked against the body? Not true. The elbow can be away from your body as long as the forearm is pointed down, perpendicular to the ground.
