Morgan Hill – The boys and girls Live Oak Water polo teams gave San Benito more than they could handle on Tuesday defeating the Haybalers 17-8 and 13-9, respectively.
Four-year starter Sam Cretcher was the top scorer for the Acorns with nine goals, followed by junior Cody Coleman with three.
With only one player on the bench, the small Live Oak team made some big defensive stops, which they turned into goals.
“Alex Senert came in and volunteered to play goalie because our starting goalie is injured,” head coach Mack Haines said. “And the rest of the guys played tough for Alex with great help defense … they made the extra effort and truly played team defense.”
To maintain possession of the ball the Acorns pressured and harassed the ‘Balers throughout the game by trapping with full-court press.
“We scored almost all of our goals on team defense,” Haines said. “It was a very satisfying team win, and I’m really proud of the whole team.”
The win against San Benito brings the boys record to 1-1 in the A division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Top scorer for the girls was Alyssa Pinnabarsi with four goals, followed by Katie Rick with three, and Rachel Cretcher with two.
“We were definitely the underdog coming in, and this was the first year we beat Hollister, so it was nice to get the win,” first-year head girls coach Kevin Paulsen said.
Lead by the speed and full court passing abilities of senior Shelby Carillo, the lady Acorns brought their league record to 2-0 with the 13-9 win over San Benito.
“I was impressed with the outside shooting, the pump fakes, and the skip shots,” Paulsen said. “We have speed, intelligence and power, and we score off of defense and fast breaks … we’re a really well balanced team.”
Both Acorn teams look to build on Tuesday’s wins when they take on Monta Vista today, with the girls starting at 3:30.
