Caltrain Announces Fare Increase
Starting April 2, Caltrain will increase its fare by 25 cents and $1.50 for a one-way ticket to ride the train, depending on how many zones a passenger travels.
The agency will also adjust seven southbound morning-commute train departure times.
In June 2006, the Caltrain board voted to implement the increase to help cover escalating operation costs. Passenger fares cover approximately 40 percent of the cost to run the service.
Fares will increase by 25 cents per zone traveled outside the boarding zone. There is no change to fares within a single zone. Monthly passes for April will be sold at the new fare rate, even if purchased before April 2.
At the same time, the departure times for seven southbound morning commute trains will change by up to three minutes. The adjustment to the train departures will serve to prevent periodic delays experienced by those trains and increase on-time performance.
Caltrain runs 96 weekday trains between San Francisco and San Jose, with additional service to Morgan Hill and Gilroy, and carries an average weekday ridership of about 35,000.
