Garlic Festival Accepting Art Poster Entries
The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc., is accepting entries for the 2007 Art Poster Contest.
A $750 first prize will go to the best entry that captures the spirit and essence of this premier food festival. In addition, the first -place winner will receive 10 posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork. The second-place winner will receive $400 and third-place $200. The deadline is 5pm, March 1, and winners will be notified by March 30. Director Edgerton Announces Resignation from Open Space Authority Board
San Jose – Craige Edgerton, a member of Santa Clara County Open Space Authority Board of Directors for the past six years, has announced his resignation. Edgerton represented District 7, which encompasses a portion of southern San Jose east of Monterey Highway and the Evergreen area.
During his time on the board, Edgerton served as both chairperson and vice chairperson and also represented OSA in the Santa Clara County Habitat Plan development process. He called his tenure as a director, “one of the best experiences of my life.”
Involved in land preservation as a volunteer for more than 15 years, Edgerton is executive director of Silicon Valley Land Conservancy.
At its meeting on Jan. 25, 2007, the OSA Board of Directors is expected to consider establishing a process for filling the vacancy created by Edgerton’s resignation. To qualify for the position, an applicant must be a registered voter at least 18 years old and live within the boundaries of District 7.
The OSA is an independent special district created in 1993 to help preserve, protect and manage urban and non-urban open space in the areas of Morgan Hill, Campbell, Milpitas, Santa Clara, San Jose and southern Santa Clara County.
The OSA has protected over 10,000 acres of land through purchase or easement and contributed to conservation easements covering an additional 2,180 acres.

Suspicious Incident
Morgan Hill – Police officers responded to an apartment at 310 E. Dunne Ave. on Friday evening after a caller reported shots had been fired in the area. According to MHPD Cpl. Ray Ramos, the suspect was not on the scene when officers got to the apartment shortly after 7pm, though the caller said he and a friend had made a “citizen’s arrest” and taken the gun from the suspect. One shot had been fired inside the apartment, Ramos said, but there were no injuries, and when officers arrived at the scene, the gun was no longer loaded. No one was arrested in the incident.
Rebekah’s Earns Accreditation
Rebekah Children’s Services has been accredited by the Council on Accreditation.
The accreditation attests taht an organization meets the highest national standards and is delivering the best quality services to the community it serves.
The process involves an in-deth examination of the organization’s compliance with best practice standards. The process includes a review of organizational standards including human resources, financial and risk managements and continuous quality improvement, as well as 39 service standards.
Rebekah’s has an annual budget of $12.3 million and a staff of 164.

Regional Tourism Web Site Launches
The South Santa Clara Valley Tourism Partnership (SSCVTP), comprised of the Gilroy Visitors Bureau and Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, has launched a new Web site promoting regional tourism www.gatewaytothecentralcoast.org. This Web site is another component of the marketing plan to bring additional visitors to South County region.
Last year, the SSCVTP was formed incorporating the theme “Gateway to the Central Coast,” which begins in Morgan Hill and extends south to Oxnard. Marketing materials promoting the many things to see and do in the South Santa Clara Valley include a 2007 desktop calendar and a two page ad in the 2007 Central Coast Visitors Guide.
