On Nov. 17, the Live Oak High School Emerald Regime Marching Band and Color Guard competed in the Western Band Association Class Championships at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Calif.

Live Oak performed their show “Theater of Darkness” – music by Danny Elfman, arranged by Nick Rodriguez.

The show featured music from the movies Spiderman 2, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow.

41 bands competed in the competition. Live Oak put together their best performance of the year and scored an 83.5, beating Grace Davis High School, of Modesto, by two-tenths of a point to win Class A for the first time ever.

The score turned out to be good enough to beat not only the class A bands (up to 60 members), but also all of the class AA bands (up to 80 members) and all but four of the Class AAA bands (up to 100 members).

This was the best finish for the Emerald Regime in years, placing fifth overall.

They also won three of the five caption awards: Best Music, Best Auxiliary, and Best General Effect.

By finishing in the top 15 the Emerald Regime earned a spot in Sunday’s Grand Championship competition.

Again, the band performed well, scoring an 81.35, placing seventh overall in the Grand Championships.

The director of the band is Greg Bergantz, and the drum major is senior Katie Kingman.
