Gilroy – Live Oak came up short against Gilroy in its opening track meet and yet Acorns’ boy coach Dean Raymond is disappointed to be away from the Mustangs and the other Tri-County Athletic League teams.
“I enjoyed the rivalries,” Raymond said after the Gilroy boys won 101-22 and the girls defeated the Acorns 89-45 Thursday in the opening meet at Garcia-Elder Complex. “I don’t know what to expect in the (Blossom Valley Athletic League).”
Live Oak is in the Santa Teresa Division with its league opener at 3:30pm Thursday against Lincoln in Morgan Hill.
The Acorns will rely heavily on senior speedster Jullard Robinson, senior jumper Mark Cedeno and junior hurdler Nic Muhn on the boys side.
Robinson reported out for track for the first time after basketball ended two weeks ago, and has already made a positive impression. He was first in the 200 in 24.11, second in the 100 in 11.66 and ran a leg on the 4 x 100 relay team.
“He never did track before so he is raw but with incredible potential,” Raymond said.
Cedeno won the triple jump in 39-4 and was second in the long jump in 19-8, the latter a personal record for the senior.
“He’s been injured for the past month and this was his first chance to test out how his legs were,” Cedeno said. “He has a great work ethic.”
Muhn ran a strong race in the 300 hurdles against Gilroy’s Peter Guenther, finishing second in 43.63. He also long-jumped 17-8.
On the girls side, Pauline Olsen, Olivia Duran and the Armstrong sisters, Katie and Stepahnie, are expected to provide plenty of scoring. Rebecca Webb and Sarah Lopez look solid in the jumps.
Olsen won the 800 run against Gilroy in 2:36 and ran a leg on the 4 x 400 relay team. Katie and Stephanie Armstrong were 1-2 in the 110 hurdles in 18.25 and 18.36, respectively. Duran was third in the mile and fourth in the 2-mile against a talented group of Mustangs. Webb won the long jump in 15-9. Lopez won the triple jump in 29-11.
“They’re very young but have a lot of potential,” Raymond said. “They did well in the first meet.”
