Morgan Hill – It couldn’t have been much closer for Sobrato during its volleyball match Thursday against Oak Grove.

However, it was the Eagles who came up with the big points late in each game to earn a 25-22, 28-26, 25-21 sweep over the Bulldogs (2-2).

“Oak Grove came out with a lot of energy, and it took us a few points to settle in,” Sobrato co-coach Kevin Miller said. “Once we settled in, we gave Oak Grove all it could handle.”

“It’s just something coach has told us to do … never give up,” said junior Bhupinder Ishpuniani, who had five service aces.

The Eagles were up 24-20 with Sobrato’s Adam Morales serving. The Bulldogs got two points before falling. Game 2 was even tighter.

“We felt we had to match their energy level, and so we just didn’t stop talking while were on the court,” Chris Nepomuceno said.

Jason Binn came up big in the second game, getting six of his 16 digs to help rattle the Oak Grove outside hitters and keep Sobrato in the game.

Game 3 “was just a lot of fun,” co-coach Rosemary Miller said. Oak Grove was again completely extended before the Eagles pulled it out late.

Jared Mammen had 13 kills for Sobrato. Shawn Tharayil had nine assists. Robert Bowen and Dallin Bassett had four blocks apiece.

The Bulldogs open Blossom Valley Athletic League play by hosting Pioneer at 7:30pm today.

Frosh-soph: Sobrato finished its preseason at 1-3 as Oak Grove won 25-17, 25-21. Alex Jagiello had six kills, six digs, four aces and three assists to lead the Bulldogs.

“The boys are learning a lot more about the game, but they are still learning … and that is encouraging,” coach Jasmin Aliifua said.
