Mo Davies: A Deserving Teacher of the Year
Dear Editor,
We were so happy to read that Live Oak teacher Mo Davies had been honored as teacher of the year. She’s indeed a great teacher. We first met Mrs. Davies when my daughter was a student at Live Oak, pursuing the typical college prep courses. She decided to take Mrs. Davies childcare class as an elective. What she discovered there was a passion for children and ways to develop her creative and artistic talents. She continued this creative process in Donna Foster’s fashion design classes – also excellent classes – using skills learned to design and sew children’s clothing. She went from an average student to one with excellent grades and scholarships.
With so much emphasis placed on College Preparatory and Advanced Placement classes and inflated grade-point averages, it’s heartening to see recognition for the vocational teachers and classes. I don’t believe the community knows enough about these programs, yet they are so important. Whether college bound or not the leadership lessons, basic life skills and common sense are invaluable. Mo Davies and other vocational teachers give us well rounded students with career choices and options they might not have considered before.
My daughter graduated in 1999 and Mo Davies has become more than a teacher to her. She and fellow teacher Donna Foster even took time out of their busy schedules to attend my daughter’s wedding. They have both become mentors and friends. My daughter now works with children and as a seamstress, and has had to turn down offers for jobs. The knowledge gained through these programs has contributed to her success. Thank you Mo Davies, you make a difference!

Move Music Series
Dear Editor,
It felt like old times … listening to music and eating ice cream from BookSmart. The final Friday night dance was held on Sept. 7 in the parking lot by BookSmart, and it was the ideal location. There was plenty of room to dance, chairs and tables to sit at, and goodies from BookSmart to munch. Snacks and dinner could also be bought at the wonderful Chinese restaurant nearby. People wandered in and out of BookSmart, chatting, reading, or just browsing. It felt right. I hope the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce will consider changing the venue of the Friday Night Music Series next summer. Change can be difficult, but this just makes sense. No streets have to be closed down, set-up is much easier (it can be done several hours ahead), more people can congregate together comfortably, and it gives everybody a good excuse to wander through the bookstore and buy a book, or at least, an ice cream cone.
Also, if you haven’t caught the great Comedy Club at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse on the last Thursday evening of each month, you have missed one of the best things Morgan Hill has to offer. Rosy’s at the Beach puts on a delicious spread of free appetizers and provides very reasonably priced beverages for purchase. There is such a rich variety of very talented and hysterically funny comedy acts to always generate plenty of laughter – the best medicine in today’s stressful world. Join the fun and support all the sponsors who bring us these wonderful events and make Morgan Hill the special place it is.
