Volunteer to help SHS Grad Night

– The Sobrato High School Grad Night Committee is seeking adult volunteers to staff five-hour shifts, either a.m. or p.m., in the wine tent and beverage ticket sales booth at the Mushroom Mardi Gras May 28 and 29. Ticket sales staff and wine pourers can raise significant funds for either the Grad Night program or for the Sobrato club or team of their choice. Both tents are located facing the amphitheater area of the Community Center so you can enjoy the festivities while working.

Breast cancer support group

– A free, drop-in group meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month for 90 minutes beginning at 5:30 p.m.. The meetings are open to anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Flower lovers meet

– The Morgan Hill flower Lovers club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.

Make Mother’s Day cards, soap

n In honor of Mother’s Day, children can create a handmade card and handmade soap for mom from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, at BookSmart, 80 E. Second St. There is a $5 fee. Please RSVP to 778-6467 to ensure space and supplies. Parent participation is required for children 5 years and younger. Parents of older children are asked to stay in the store during the workshop.

Enjoy ‘No Bull BBQ’

– The second Annual No Bull BBQ Cookoff with more than 70 entries from across the country, takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. The competition is the largest on the West Coast. Contestants will battle for $13,000 in cash prizes as well as the People’s Choice Award. The competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and includes five categories this year. There will be live music from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the kick-off and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday during the competition, along with food and the chance to sample the best from the competitors and vote to choose the People’s Choice. Attendance is free.

Farmers Market opens Saturday

– The Morgan Hill Certified Farmers’ Market is opening for its 26th season from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, at Third and Depot streets.

The Morgan Hill Farmers’ Market provides access to local fruits and vegetables, and heirloom variety produce from family farmers. This season’s harvest, direct from California Certified growers and producers, brings you Watsonville’s sweet strawberries, the first cherries of the year straight from Modesto, your favorite field flower bouquets, organic produce, and more. Weekly crop updates will also be updated on the Morgan Hill Facebook page every Saturday. Shoppers can also enjoy free recipes at the market’s information booth and on the farmers’ market Facebook page.

Free comic book day

– Anime 101, a Morgan Hill comic book store, is one of thousands of shops around the world celebrating the comic book art form from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday May 7. On Free Comic Book Day, more than two million comic books will be given away by participating stores, introducing as many people as possible to the wonders of comic books!

Learn the art of backpacking

– Volunteer and avid backpacker, Manny Pitta, will look at lightweight equipment and teach techniques that will send you skipping into the backcountry in no time at 10 a.m. Saturday at Henry Coe State Park headquarters.

Mother’s Day in the park

– Celebrate moms at Henry W. Coe State Park from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday May 8. Have a hearty breakfast of eggs, sausage, biscuits, fried potatoes, and assorted beverages. Enjoy the wildflowers, food, activities for kids and live old-time music.

AARP safe driving class offered

– At the nation’s first and largest classroom refresher course for motorists 50 and older, participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety and new laws. Three-year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on auto insurance upon completion of this one-day program.

No tests, class materials and a certified AARP instructor are provided by the American Association of Retired Persons. You do not have to be a member of AARP. There is a minimal DMV certificate fee.
