“Red Phone, a large numbers of day laborers gather every day in various areas around the tool rental store on East Main Avenue. Isn’t there any city ordinance against this type of loitering?”

Red Phone: Dear Isn’t There a Law, actually, no. According to Morgan Hill police Sgt. Shane Palsgrove, it is perfectly legal for day laborers or anyone else for that matter to stand on a sidewalk to look for work.

“Where it becomes illegal is when people block sidewalks or driveways,” Palsgrove said. “From time to time officers meet with the group to remind them of their obligation to follow the law as members of our community.”

Well, there you have it, good caller. Hope that helps.

Trees removed to enhance visibility

“Red Phone, I noticed that some trees were removed from the median of Edmundson Avenue. Was this done to increase visibility so that cars driving can see pedestrians crossing at the crosswalk that’s in the middle of the street there? I guess if it was done with that in mind then it was a good idea, though it looks kind of bare now.”

Red Phone: Dear It Was a Good Idea, Red Phone contacted Scott Creer, senior civil engineer, who said yes, the trees in the median on West Edmundson Avenue were removed to enhance visibility in the area of the north/south pedestrian crossing.

“In addition, improvements are scheduled to be completed at this location in early summer, including the installation of flashing LED pedestrian signage, the placement of a high-visibility crosswalk and some minor painted legend modifications,” Creer said.

There you have it, good caller. Hope that answers your questions.
