Breast cancer support group

– A free, drop-in group meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month for 90 minutes beginning at 5:30 p.m. The meetings are open to anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Gavilan College cosmetology students offer discounts

– The Gavilan College Cosmetology Department is offering a 20 percent discount on all coloring services on Wednesdays and Fridays to the general public and Gavilan staff. The discounts are offered from 10 a.m. to 2:20 p.m., color to be started no later than noon.

Flower lovers meet

– The Morgan Hill Flower Lover’s Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. This will be the last meeting before summer break and will commence again in September. 

Keep teens safe, sober on graduation night

– For 23 years Live Oak seniors have had an organized safe and sober alternative on their graduation night thanks to a nonprofit group that organizes LOHS Grad Night each year. Again this year the board members of the Live Oak Safe and Sober Grad Night are asking for the community’s help to make it successful.

They are requesting monetary contributions or any other donations or gifts from the community. Donations are tax-deductible and any gifts donated will be used at fundraising events and monetary contributions go directly to the event.

The Safe and Sober Grad Night is endorsed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the local police and fire departments.

Find a good used book

– The Friends of the Library Book Sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Morgan Hill Library, 660 W Main Ave. All books are $1 or less, and only $3 per bag for the last hour of the sale. Children’s books are .10 to .25 cents each. Books of all types will be included: fiction, non-fiction (many business titles), old and rare, hardcover and paper. The Members-Only Preview will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, before the sale opens to the public. Memberships ($10) may be purchased at the door. This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for summer reading. Teachers and nonprofits may take books for free at the end of the sale.

Bring out leadership qualities

– “Developing Your Child To Lead,” an interactive seminar will show parents how they can identify the leadership aptitude of their child and give them the skills to help support and encourage their child’s development as a leader. Roselynn Pucan-Meagor, KidLead Certified Trainer, will lead the seminar. KidLead is a leadership program focused on youth 10 to 13 years. Talk with your school trustee

– In an effort to open doors of communication with parents and the community, the Morgan Hill Unified board of education has scheduled a series of semi-monthly opportunities for individuals to have a casual one-on-one conversation with a board member. Bring ideas, suggestions and questions and provide input to the board’s decision-making process.

Parade entry deadline extended

– For all of those who have been thinking entering the 2011 July 4th Parade but haven’t submitted an application, it’s not too late. The regular fee dates May 5 through May 24 have been extended to June 4. And an incentive award is being offered.

Kite day is near

– Experience the color and excitement of kite flying from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday June 18 as scores gather to see how many kites can fly up at Pacheco Pass at the 10th Annual Family Kite Day held at Pacheco State Park, in a big windy field.

Everyone who flies a kite will receive a souvenir Kite Day button. There will be other fun activities including a ‘Make Your Own Kite Free’ table and free face painting as well as pie eating contests and bubble gum blowing contests. In addition, there will be interesting tables to check out, including nature tables and a ‘sun and wind’ table, as well as free crafts for the kids. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, plus it may be cool and windy or very hot. ‘Hot Dog Heaven’ from Los Banos will sell inexpensive lunches as well. Drop by anytime and join the fun. The only fee is the $5 state park day use fee per vehicle.

This special recreation event is sponsored by California State Parks and Pacheco State Park’s Fatjo Corporation, and marks the occasion of Pacheco State Park’s 14th Year Anniversary as a state park. Big Band music comes to MH

– The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West’s Jazz Ensemble, “The Commanders” will present a free concert of classic big band jazz music at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, at 6:30 p.m. June 19.

Under the musical direction of TSgt. Jim Butler, this 20-piece big band performs music ranging from the Big Band sounds of the 1940s to more contemporary sounds for audiences throughout the West Coast.

The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West is stationed at Travis Air Force Base. As the only remaining active duty Air Force band west of the Rockies, its geographic area of responsibility includes Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho and California. The Band of the Golden West has performed for gubernatorial inaugurations, with guest artists such as Toni Tennille, Marvin Stamm, and Bob Hope, and for the fans of the Oakland A’s, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Raiders, and the San Francisco 49ers.

‘Altered Reality’ on display at Morgan Hill House

– The Morgan Hill Photography Club and the Morgan Hill Historical Society are presenting a gallery show at the Morgan Hill House titled “Altered Reality.” The show features 41 original photographs that, through the use of computer software special effects, have been transformed into fantasy works of art.

The Morgan Hill House is located at 17689 Monterey Road, and is open to the public Fridays 12 to 3 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The show runs though July 10, 2011.
