A brush fire that broke out in northeast Morgan Hill is now 80 percent contained, and has burned 27 acres, according to Capt. Mary Gutierrez, spokeswoman for San Jose Fire Department.

The fire broke out about 4:30 p.m. near Main Avenue and Liberata Drive, and smoke could be seen from U.S. 101 as it drifted north. More than 150 firefighters are on the scene, as well as two hand crews with 17 members in each crew.

The blaze briefly threatened structures, but because of a “good containment line around the structures” the properties should be fine, Gutierrez said. It did damage one storage trailer.

Two California Department of Forestry helicopters circled overhead dropping water and at least one plane is making chemical drops on the brush fire. Fifteen engines, two dozers and four 2,000-gallon water-tank trucks are on site.

There were no evacuations but officials ordered a “shelter-in-place to threatened residents. The number of residents was not immediately known.

Investigators are on the scene trying to determine the cause, Gutierrez added.

Dan Legan, who with her husband are building a home at the end of Liberata Drive, called 911 shortly after the fire broke out just east of their home.

“I never thought it could spread that fast,” she said of the blaze that burned up a hill toward several homes northeast of their home.

Despite the fire, she said they’ll still move in and are expecting an electrical inspection Friday in anticipation of moving in shortly.
