I happen to be one of the parents that think that building Sobrato High School is a good thing. It offers a chance for two smaller learning communities, and double the opportunity for all those extracurricular activities that many students (and parents) see as invaluable such as ASB, leadership, sports, band and so on.
Now that we finally have built it, we need to run it and maintain it. It’s time to consider some local revenue generation in this community. As the state provides funds based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA) and we are losing a number of students (at the 9-12 level especially), I assume to private schools, it’s time to start providing for the children who stay here. If that means a parcel tax or bond issue that can go directly to items like teacher pay, bus drivers and custodians, so be it. Who knows? We might even encourage more students to actually stay here.
Our children’s education is important. It’s good for Morgan Hill as a whole, from property owners to business owners, to support public education at home. Don’t wait for state funding to help. It’s clear the state can’t do the job right now.
It’s time for this community to bite the bullet and provide for itself. A little tax is a small price to pay to make this a place where parents would choose to raise a family.
I’m a parent of three children in the Morgan Hill School District.
