In my 45-year career, there have been three things essential in the purchase or leasing of real estate. They are, location, location, location.
We have all heard this old saying and we all realize the truth inherent therein. In this instance, the library should be placed in the best location, downtown. The saying could be rewritten to “there are three things that are essential to a great library location, downtown, downtown, downtown … .”
It seems almost too simple to point up the benefits of the location. The site is centrally located, with parking adjacent and within an easy stroll from the train depot and Community Center parking spots and other spaces, whereby an impulse may arise to visit the library and research that item you’ve been meaning to research.
To borrow a phrase, the downtown library will become “a clean, well-lighted place for books” and for people of all ages. It is easily accessible to all points of the compass and the site welcomes users from east and west Dunne, from Cochrane, and from north and south Monterey, by bus, rail, bike, mom’s SUV, and, importantly, on foot. The site provides alternatives only offered in the downtown setting, a place for coffee, a snack, a meeting at the bagel shop to discuss findings, the fulfilling of a last-minute shopping thought, a quick trip to the Community Center to see that “Art Display,” meet the kids at the library and walk to dinner at Rosy’s or sushi at Hiromi’s.
These opportunities and more are only available in a downtown setting, the library will grow and flourish just as the downtown will blossom with the other nutrients added by the mayor and City Council in its continued support of the downtown. The library, the Community Center and shop owners, property owners, visitors and school children are all parts that come together for those of us who seek a place full with knowledge and the offer of a better life. A place we can proudly call Downtown Morgan Hill.
I am a downtown property owner and ask that you lend your support to the downtown location.
J.L. Di Salvo, Morgan Hill
