Dear Editor,
Your recent article about a meeting of top mathematicians in Morgan Hill, run by Brian Conrey of the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM), prompted me to describe for you the role he also plays in support of our community, through the MathCounts program.
He meets twice a month with a group of mathematically talented Morgan Hill middle school students at Gavilan College.
Conrey makes the students and adult volunteers in the Morgan Hill MathCounts program feel every bit as important as the Field Medal winner with whom he recently met.
I recall one Wednesday evening when Conrey caught the “red eye” flight out of San Francisco just so he could keep his commitment to teaching MathCounts that evening.
AIM also provides the financial support for MathCounts, allowing us to meet at Gavilan and enroll students in the MathCounts competition from four middle schools (Britton, Murphy, Charter and Oakwood) and two elementary schools (Paradise Valley and San Martin-Gwinn)..
The students of Morgan Hill MathCounts are also indebted to the other adult volunteers who make MathCounts happen in Morgan Hill. At Martin Murphy: Cheryl Roddick of SJSU (coach), Yonsue Young (assistant coach), Lisa Maack (coordinator). At Britton: Hardik Kheskani (assistant coach). At Charter: Dave Bostick (coach). At Oakwood: Yung Vay, Anita Kandula and Jenny Patrino (coaches).
Finally, we have just concluded our “rec” season and are moving into our competition season, with teams of eight students from each school. We invite you to contact us about next year’s program at ma********@*****er.net
