Also, Bulldogs a win or two shy of beating Rams
MORGAN HILL — Live Oak’s magic number is two.
That’s how many wins the Acorns need to claim outright ownership of their first league championship since 1981.
Their somewhat challenging road maintained its integrity Thursday as they won by another convincing margin, 58-20, against visiting Independence.
The going gets tougher soon.
Live Oak (5-0 West Valley Division) visits San Jose on Thursday before hosting its Feb. 10 league finale against undefeated Lick. The Acorns also are preparing for the Blossom Valley Athletic League Finals tournament, which they will host Feb. 13.
“Boy, we’re getting close,” Live Oak coach Robert Fernandez said Friday. “We’ve got so much to get ready for right now. It’s exciting. What we’re doing is really buckling down to get ready for San Jose; we’re not overlooking them. I’m pretty confident it’s going to come down to us and James Lick in our home gym.”
The Acorns dominated the upper weight classes Thursday, getting pins by Cesar Gamboa (140 pounds), Kenny Lee (145), Joe Dorsch (152), Tyler Geer (171) and Derek Peralta (189), plus forfeits at 160, 215 and heavyweight.
Also for Live Oak, Amy Fearnside pinned her opponent in the first round at 103 pounds, and Clayton Howard won by major decision, 14-2, at 119.
Willow Glen 39, Sobrato 33
The Bulldogs won five of the final six matches Tuesday, but the host Rams built a big enough lead early on to improve to 4-1 in Santa Teresa Division duals.
After Brian Gomes earned a forfeit at 103 pounds, a Sobrato wrestler did not raise his hand until Evan Enright’s win by 11-0 decision at 152.
The Bulldogs (1-3) received pins from Ryan Brewer (160), Brandon Maack (171), Rafael Anaya (215) and heavyweight Gustavo Ramirez.
