An early morning fire burned the roof off a north Morgan Hill home and charred the interior, causing debris to collapse onto a recent model Volkswagen sport-utility vehicle and other contents.

Santa Clara County and South County fire engines responded to the fire about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. The first engine on the scene, from the county fire department, arrived to find the home on the 19100 block of Calle Moniz fully involved in flames.

A department spokesperson said flames were shooting out of the roof of the building. No one was in the home when fire crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Capt. Joe Rellamas of the South County Fire District.

“The home was damaged to the point where it may be structurally unsound,” Rellamas said. County building inspectors were en route to the burned home later Thursday morning.

The flames burned through almost the entire roof of the residence. Singed walls and doors inside the home could be seen through the opening where the front door had previously been.

A family of three lived in the house, according to an insurance adjuster who was at the scene in the late morning. At about 11 a.m., about a half-dozen Calfire trucks were still at the scene of the fire, cleaning up and investigating the incident.

The county fire department sent two engines to combat the initial blaze. Those engines were there until about 6 a.m. South County sent four engines to the fire.
