The golf swing is a complicated machine, much like the engine of your car. The one quick check you should do regularly to have your engine run properly is to check your oil. The “oil check” of your golf swing is monitoring the position of your back foot after impact.

I have never seen a good player finish with their back foot firmly planted on the ground. This indicates a serious error in the golf swing and will lead to a decrease in the distance you hit the ball.

If you want to hit the ball in the direction of your target, you’ll want to drive off your back leg toward your target. If your back foot is still firmly on the ground, than their is no lower-body leg drive and you are hitting the ball with just your arms.

Furthermore, you could be doing a “reverse” weight shift, where you put weight on your front leg at the top of your back swing and transfer it backwards to your back leg on the downswing. This is much like stepping backwards when trying to throw a ball forward.

To remedy this weight shift problem, try driving the inside of your back knee toward your front knee as the club is approaching the ball. This should start to get the outer part of your back foot to coming off the ground. As you continue to drive through the ball, more of the foot — the heel, especially — is coming off the ground until you finish with a pivot of the right foot with just your toe in contact with the ground and all of your weight on your front leg.
