In one of the more affluent counties in the United States, homelessness is still a significant problem.
Each year Santa Clara County government and community-based organizations make available over 3,000 beds to provide temporary shelter for the homeless. During the winter months, cold weather shelters are opened adding 350 more beds to accommodate those who shy away from shelters until it is absolutely necessary.
The county coordinates a collaborative comprised of more than 100 organizations that provide shelter and/or services to the homeless population. This year 27 of these organizations will share a federal grant of $8.7 million to provide transitional housing and permanent supportive housing and services.
