Gilroy – Blue skies, green grass, and string?

Yes, string.

String was all the buzz amongst the 83 players who competed in the 11th annual IDI Firecracker Gold Classic at Eagle Ridge Golf Course on Friday.

With a large portion of the proceeds going to the IDI sponsored Fourth of July Festivities, the competition took a backseat to the fun.

To make the event even more interesting every participant added another variable to their handicap, each drawing a piece of string from a hat..

The strings were of various lengths from six inches to three feet, and could only be used once during the tournament to advance a player’s ball, or get a player out of a “rough” spot.

Most players used them on the putting green in place of attempting a difficult putt.

Playing in teams of four, there were two winning teams in the tournament.

The mens winning team included Stu Carson, Dr. Dave Conragen, Steve Stratton, and Jim Stacke.

The Co-Ed winning team included Annette Dirista, Shawn Hennesy, Lonnie Michael, and Sheila Michael.
