Trailing the Diamondbacks by three runs late in the game, the Red Sox began what could have been their last at-bats of the season as a steady rain began to fall.
The Red Sox’ Zachary Riveron led off the comeback with a sharp infield single. Dylan Gutierrez followed with another single and big Kristian Knowles banged a towering two-run, ground-rule double to bring the Sox within one run.
Then, Ronnie Salinas reached on a clutch single and catcher Eric Dunbar tied the game with a single up the middle the game went into extra innings.
The Diamondbacks sent up their fourth, fifth and sixth-place batters in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, Kevin Omyejekwe lined a triple to left field and Tony Hyer hit a drive up the middle to score Omyejekwe.
David Miller hit an RBI single to score Hyer, and Keith Arbogast hit a clutch two-out RBI single to extend the Diamondback lead back to three going into the seventh inning.
But the Red Sox rallied in the top of the seventh. Ben Hagiperos hit a lead off single to start the Red Sox rally. Then Patrick Mueller stepped into the batter’s box and slammed a towering two-run homer over the left field fence to bring the Sox within a single run.
Zachary Riveron also reached on a single and Dylan Gutierrez hit a single up the middle to put the winning run on second base.
Kristian Knowles tied the game with a one out sacrifice to the right side, and Andrew Salinas slammed a hard grounder to score the winning run and claim the City Championship for the Sox.
Early in the game, strong pitching by the Diamondbacks’ Josh Alaniz shut down the Red Sox hitting machine. Alaniz went the first two innings, allowing only one hit and getting five strikeouts.
Travis Moulden came on in relief of Alaniz in the third and struck out the side.
For the Red Sox, Patrick Mueller kept the Diamondbacks scoreless through two innings with five strike outs and the help of some solid defense by first baseman Riley Burg. Ben Hagiperos came on in the third and struck out three.
In the fourth, the Diamond Backs scored four runs on hits from Domian Phelan, Kevin Omyejekwe, Tony Hyer, David Miller, Stephen Brenny and Aubrey Sellers.
The Red Sox fought back to come within two runs on hits from Jake Armijo, Dante Spencer, Ben Hagiperos and Patrick Muller.
The Diamondbacks would pick up one more in the fifth after a lead-off triple by Travis Moulden and an RBI single by Nick Penzetta to extend their lead to three runs going into the top of fifth.
