MH’s Katie Mains and Jessica Post led a strong pitching effort with several clutch appearances. The Pride earned a berth in the championship bracket by going 2-1 in pool play, losing only to the Ceres Sizzle. The girls began their march to the title by first beating another MH team in a close 5-4 game. Next, they played a tough team from Newark but breezed through that game 5-1.
In the finale, the Morgan Hill girls took on Ceres, which had yet to lose, for the second time. After MH jumped out to an early 11-3 lead, the Ceres team fought back and took a 12-11 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Facing elimination, MH’s Heather Johnson stepped to the plate with two outs and no runners on, and promptly hit a clutch home run to tie the score and send the game into extra innings. Ceres scored three times in its half of the eighth inning. But MH batted through the order in the last half of the inning and won the game with a dramatic four-run rally.
