In a tight, defensive struggle, the Yankees secured their first win by beating the previously undefeated Dodgers 5-3.
Strong defense and aggressive base running ruled the day, in a game in which there were only five total hits.
Nathaniel Batad and Taylor Pullen combined to pitch three-hit ball, allowing only doubles to Sean Schlaefli and Sean Aitken, with Ben Hartl adding the other hit.
The Yankees offense came in small doses, with a suicide squeeze by Jason Struzik scoring Batad in the first, then Pullen’s ground out scoring Struzik for the lead.
Schlaefli relieved Aaron Armijo and surrendered walks to Auston Rutldge and Tyler Pederson, Rutledge scoring on Christian Davies-White’s single and Pederson scoring on Bradley Morris’s grounder.
Armijo pitched three innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Schlaefli pitched three innings and allowed three runs in relief.
Defensively, Davies-White and Bradley Morris made great catches in the outfield for the Yankees, while Rutledge was strong at third base.
