Dear Editor, The arrest of student Chris Smith by Deputy Ron
Breuss at Live Oak High School was disgraceful. I can
’t imagine what Deputy Breuss must have been thinking. Oh, maybe
he wasn’t thinking. He was just being a police officer. And police
officers aren’t usually allowed to be reasonable. They have to
behave strictly by the written law, regardless of how outrageous or
stupid the law is in various ci
rcumstances.
Dear Editor,
The arrest of student Chris Smith by Deputy Ron Breuss at Live Oak High School was disgraceful. I can’t imagine what Deputy Breuss must have been thinking. Oh, maybe he wasn’t thinking. He was just being a police officer. And police officers aren’t usually allowed to be reasonable. They have to behave strictly by the written law, regardless of how outrageous or stupid the law is in various circumstances.
Please don’t get me wrong. I respect police officers and the extremely difficult job they have. I can’t imagine my loved ones taking the risks that police officers take. But what has happened to common sense? Common sense has to be integrated into laws, or we will become a police state with exaggerated behavior such as this by Deputy Breuss.
Yes, everyone, even special ed students, need to respect the law. But this was complete overreaction by Deputy Breuss. If any action had been necessary, it should have been by the school.
This wasn’t an act of battery by Chris Smith. If anything, it was a harmless, yet stupid, action. It wasn’t an act of battery.
Our police are already overtaxed. Perhaps we shouldn’t have overreactive, overworked, police dressing up as the grim reaper. Let’s not waste taxpayers money and police officers time on the Grim Reaper program. I am totally for the program, but let’s get a parent volunteer to do this instead. Our police are already pushed to the limits. Let them concentrate on catching real criminals.
