Dear Editor,

I’ve been reading Ben Gilmore’s letters and columns for a long time. I’ve always thought he was way out there in right field but he certainly has a right to express his opinion. I even basically agree with at least one of his points in his most recent column. Initiatives generally do “represent the failure or cowardice of our elected officials to act.” But that’s not why I’m writing this letter.

Ben wrote an 800- or 900-word column that I can summarize in 11 words. If you don’t agree with me don’t vote Nov. 2 because you’re dumb.

Normally when I read something like this I would analyze the writer’s reasoning to see if it made sense or if it was flawed in some way. Ah, but Ben you’re way ahead of me on this one. I can hear you now “Reasoning?” I don’t got no reasoning! I don’t need no stinkin’ reasoning! If you don’t agree with me don’t vote because you’re dumb! What’s so hard about that? Ben, a little unsolicited career advice, don’t become an inspirational speaker.

We must be in the middle of a “dumb” epidemic in this country. Using Ben’s “logic” more than half of the people that voted in 2000 were “dumb;” they voted for one of the other guys. According to the latest polls we still have a significant number of “dumb” Americans. Ben’s hoping a vaccine is on the way.

C’mon Ben, just between you and me, are you a shill for the Democratic Party? I’m sure they would like to make at least the first half of your recent column required reading for all undecided voters. Heck, just that one paragraph about the presidential race. Your endorsement could put John Kerry over the top.
