Dear Editor,

Morgan Hill Unified School District was not named because it was to be Morgan Hill’s School District. The name chosen was simply a matter of geographical convenience.

The district occupied substantially the same boundaries as its predecessor, the Live Oak High School District, which was 296 square miles.

Logically, the name should have been the Live Oak School District. Unfortunately there were about 16 Live Oak school districts at that time.

Bill Britton wanted to name the new district the “Peter Burnett Unified School District” because he believed that Morgan Hill – the man – was immoral.

There was even an unexpressed candidate: the “Baja Coyote Unified School District.”

But in the end the name chosen was the Morgan Hill Unified School District. The reasons were geographical and postal convenience.

William R. Keig, Morgan Hill
