As you know, it can be very hot in Morgan Hill. Because some of the city’s water wells are currently turned off, there have been times during the recent heat wave that the community used more water throughout the day than we were able to pump. Since our storage reservoir levels were dropping and we always need to keep an adequate reserve for fire safety, water conservation became an urgent concern.
As a community, we have one more week in which we are asking you to use water conscientiously. In mid-July, the new perchlorate treatment facility should be operational at the city’s Nordstrom well and our water supplies will be substantially increased. This facility is guaranteed by its supplier to deliver water without detectable perchlorate that fully complies with State law.
In the meantime, if we have days that are over 95 degrees, the community needs to join together to reduce our water demand. During a heat wave, please consider the following:
• Delay watering your lawn and garden if possible – Do what you need to do to keep your landscape alive, but be willing to have your lawn look a little less lush for a day or two.
• Take a laundry holiday and only wash those clothes you need to until the heat wave subsides – Hey, that old shirt in the bottom of your drawer probably still fits. Remember …. retro is in.
• Take a shorter shower – you’re probably not that dirty anyway.
• Only wash full loads in the dishwasher – always a good water-saving and money-saving idea.
• Be water smart – think about other ways you can be extra efficient with all of your water use – you’re probably water smarter than you think.
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. Together, we can make a big difference.
Eco-Fact of the Week: The average shower uses about two gallons of water per minute.
