As the rising sun burned off the morning haze over the Eagle
Ridge Golf Club Friday, a throng of dedicated volunteers mustered
around Tournament Director Deb Guidry and Booster Club President
Pam Mom awaiting final orders.
While golfers were enjoying the breakfast buffet or loosening up on the driving range, these volunteers were deploying all over the club and course selling “Mulligans,” hanging banners, posting signs representing tournament sponsors, taking photos and loading the beverage carts which were strategically stationed on the links.
At 11 a.m. 112 golfers, hackers, duffers and earnest novices teed off for the first Live Oak Athletic Boosters Golf Classic. What followed could only be identified as five hours of good old fashioned fun. Interspersed within the traditional “scramble” format were a putting contest, a hole–in–one contest for a 2004 Chevrolet, three “closest to the pin” contests, a “Vegas” hole and “Buy a Putt and “Buy a Drive” holes.
Later in the afternoon, while old friends and new acquaintances gathered to enjoy a few adult beverages, watch the San Francisco Giants fall (again) and swap lies about their drives and putts, the volunteers were still busy selling raffle tickets and staging the dining room for the evening’s festivities, including both a live and silent auction. About 5:30 p.m. two hundred friends of Live Oak gathered to break bread, share more stories and find out who the winners were.
With a team round of 59, 13 under par, the winning team of Cassidy O’Hara, Scott Brunello, Scott Swall and Boots Del Baggio were awarded their trophies by Deb Guidry. The team of Chris and Roy Jackson, along with Mike Rusch and Bob Fink won the putting contest and each received a new inverted mass putter designed and manufactured by Aserta Sports, Inc. of San Jose (www.AsertaSports.com).
“We really appreciate the support of the community and especially want to recognize our primary sponsors, Giancola Concrete Construction Company, and MG & Sons Drywall and Acoustics” said Guidry. “The generosity of all our sponsors was critical to achieving our financial goal,” she continued.
“We had high expectations,” said Mom. “We were excited because this was the first tournament the boosters ever hosted, but we all had a great time and Deb did a great job organizing the day’s events. We achieved our goal, which was to earn more than $25,000 for the student-athletes of Live Oak, and we are optimistic that there will be an even better tournament next year. We especially want to thank our volunteers and all those generous golfers who participated in making this a great day.”
