“Red Phone, I live in Gilroy but I love going to Morgan Hill. It is such a quaint little city, but I wonder about this every time I drive through town, why the two large speed bumps in the middle of downtown? Just wondering.”
Red Phone: Dear Just Wondering, Red Phone contacted Scott Creer, senior civil engineer with the Morgan Hill Public Works Department. He said the speed humps (bumps) were installed by the city several years ago to enhance pedestrian safety at the Third Street crossing in the city’s downtown.
“The humps function as speed reduction devices and are designed for vehicles to comfortably (and safely) drive over at a speed of 25 mph.” Creer said. “With the installation of the humps, traffic speeds in the downtown have been reduced, thus providing the intended results of creating a more pedestrian friendly environment in the city’s downtown.”
There you have it, good caller. Another friendly reminder to all that the humps can be traversed at the speed limit.
A lot of people on Third Street
“Red Phone, I know there have been a lot of complaints from people regarding the Third Street Promenade. But, now that the weather is nice, I’m seeing more and more people walking the street, sitting on the benches and showing the fountain to their children. It looks like it’s going to be a real positive for the community. I hope those that decried the idea will come around.”
Red Phone: Dear Enjoying the Street, Red Phone couldn’t agree more. Since the street opened a few months ago, Red Phone has seen steadily increasing traffic. There are people sitting on the benches eating lunch or reading a book or newspaper, and strolling along the expansive sidewalks on their way to one of the many downtown eateries.
Red Phone too has seen children playing around the fountain and that is a worry, especially when parents aren’t watching them. The street so much resembles a parkway, that some people tend to forget it is a street. Parents, if you allow your children to cross the street to check out the fountain, make sure you keep an eye on them.
Hope that suffices as a response, good caller. And Red Phone is looking forward to the April 17 Third Street Promenade celebration and the upcoming summer when even more people will be out and about, enjoying beautiful downtown Morgan Hill.
