FRESNO – Live Oak graduate Brandon Villafuerte picked up his seventh save for the Portland Beavers Saturday night.
Villafuerte, who was optioned to the Beavers from the San Diego Padres on June 9, has a 1-0 record with a 1.98 ERA.
In 23 games, he has given up 28 hits and nine walks. Villafuerte has allowed just one home run while striking out 26 batters.
Villafuerte came into the game Saturday night to try to hold a 4-3 lead over the Fresno Grizzlies.
Jeffrey Hammonds tried to stretch a leadoff single into a double. The ball was hit in the gap, but centerfielder Jason Bay chased it down and was able to throw Hammonds out at second base.
Villafuerte then got both Craig Kuzmic and Guillermo Rodriguez to strikeout swinging at low pitches to end the game.
In 22 games with the Padres, Villafuerte had an 0-2 record with two saves and a 4.60 ERA.
Villafuerte was one of the players that the Padres rotated into the spot of closer when Trevor Hoffman was injured. Former Giant Rod Beck now is the closer for the Padres.
