Dear Editor,
On behalf of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Salinas Valley Memorial Health System, I am writing to thank members of your community for providing a very valuable service for our cancer patients.
The Chat and Stitch Ladies of Morgan Hill have been making hats for our patients who have suffered from hair loss due to chemotherapy for almost a year. As you can imagine, hair loss is a very big issue for someone undergoing cancer treatment. Of course, your appearance is altered. Additionally, it is a very visible reminder both to the patient and to anyone who sees the patient. Many women are very uncomfortable wearing a wig. The Chat and Stitch hats offer them another option.
A member of your business community also needs to be thanked. Shirley of Continental Stitch donated some elegant, colorful scarves. Our patients can use them with a simple turban to achieve a truly glamorous effect.
It is important to note that the support our patients are receiving from these sources goes well beyond the gift item. When a stranger donates their time and materials to make an investment in our patients’ well-being, it offers a very powerful message of support. That patient has people that she does know not caring about her. It is one thing to have backing from friends and family members, but the additional community encouragement is a great sources of strength for anyone on a cancer journey.
We appreciate the generosity of these outstanding citizens.
On behalf of our doctors and Cancer Center personnel, thank you very much.
Dana Calhoon, program coordinator,
