A golden opportunity

Michaela Swensen’s parents couldn’t be prouder of her for signing with California for field hockey, but she’s not about to let her mother, Michele, live down the time she dropped her off at a recruiting camp at Cal last summer.

Plus Peter and Don?

Two Garlic Capital natives who previously gave the public a solid “no” when asked if they would run for mayor in 2012 have re-opened the door of possibility, meaning Gilroy’s mayoral candidates could potentially double.

Touted San Benito QB moving to Morgan Hill

Quarterback Michael Bocksnick, who last season led San Benito High School to its first Tri-County Athletic League championship in six years, is moving to Morgan Hill and will transfer to Live Oak or Sobrato for his final year of high school, according to his father, Herb, a former SBHS freshman football coach.

Council looks to replace itself as EDC board

With the clock ticking, the Morgan Hill Downtown Economic Development Corporation will meet during a special session Wednesday to consider replacing itself as the five-member board of directors and appointing a new slate of seven board members – five of whom are not connected to the city via a paycheck, commission seat or any other municipal involvement. The city council currently serves as the EDC’s board, but the council and city staff want to create some independence with an “arm’s length” distance between the private nonprofit corporation and the city itself, according to City Manager Ed Tewes.

Not all crosswalks are treated equally

“Red Phone, the flashing lights on the Little Llagas Creek crosswalk signs are permanently flashing. This gives a false signal to drivers that pedestrians are entering the roadway, which is not the case. I have observed some drivers stopping, while most are totally ignoring the flashing lights – since they are always flashing, (day and night). While I applaud the city for installing the creek path, the flashing lights at the crosswalk should only be activated when needed to give a real warning to drivers. This is the case for the creek crosswalk at W. Edmundson Avenue. Let's be consistent on how we install/use safety signage in our city. We do not need any more disasters on Cosmo Drive.”

Don Gage considers running for Gilroy mayor

Following Friday’s surprise news that Gilroy City Councilman Peter Arellano is exploring the possibility of joining the 2012 mayoral race, Don Gage, Santa Clara Valley Water District director and former Gilroy mayor said he’s thinking about dropping his name into the pool of candidates.
