UPDATED: Sale of former RDA property approved
Upsetting a nearby resident and her family who said the proposed use of the former Associated Concrete site is the opposite of what they were promised, the city will sell a 1.63-acre parcel on East Main Avenue to a developer who plans to build a 140-unit apartment complex there.
One child, plenty of company
If U.S. birth rates – declining steadily since 2007 – stay at their current level, the average woman is expected to give birth to exactly 1.9 children in her lifetime. And until we figure out how to raise 90 percent of a child, we’re going to focus on that first number: 1.
POTW: Marlo
Marlo is a 3-month-old cat who is very playful, energetic, curious and good with other cats. She is one of several kittens available at the San Martin Animal Shelter. There are also more kittens available to foster. If you are interested, please call (408) 686-3900.
Brave
Although it takes its time getting there, “Brave” turns into a powerful story of transformation, as the young princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald) sets out to rescue her mother (Emma Thompson) from a witch’s spell that has turned her into a bear. And the queen’s husband, Fergus (Billy Connolly), absolutely loathes bears. Although “Brave” is satisfying and spirited and laced with humor, it doesn’t quite mark a return to form for Pixar following the digital house’s disappointing 12th feature, “Cars 2.” Still, a lot of heart has gone into this affair, which is rife with Celtic-inspired music and montages of the red-headed Merida traipsing across moors, climbing cliffs, riding horses, shooting her bow and arrows. When her mother (still in human form) announces that it’s time to consider suitors for her betrothal, Merida wants none of it. And when the child and the bear are off in the woods, looking to undo their curse, it’s the daughter who takes charge.
