Judge to decide on uncensored police reports in Tara Romero case

The judge presiding over the case of five young men suspected of murdering Morgan Hill resident Tara Romero, 14, is expected to issue a ruling next week on whether or not the defendants can have access to uncensored police reports.

‘Joshie’ out of a coma, starting speech therapy

Joshua Valdez, 22, the Morgan Hill resident who was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident last month, is no longer comatose and recently started speech therapy at San Jose Regional Medical Center.

Common poorwill mistakenly ‘saved,’ brought to WERC

Garlic ice cream, garlic Jelly Bellies, garlic cheesecake, garlic grasshoppers. Well, maybe the last won’t be offered at the Gilroy Garlic Festival (July 27-29) this year, but who knows? The parents of this unusual little baby bird just might have acquired a taste for spicy bugs when they set up “housing” next door to a Gilroy garlic stand.   

Badwater Report

Hats off to Pam Reed and the SVRC crew for a great finish at this year's Badwater Ultramarathon. Pam finished 2nd among women and 17th overall with a time of 31:06:43. It wasn't super hot this year but it was very windy.

Barney in a box

Foster momma Barnadette (in rear), the educational barn owl at the Wildlife Education & Rehabiliation Center, has ceded her housing box to the baby barn owl nicknamed “Burrito Barney” (June 27).  He appears to be mimicking her “threat” behavior—glaring, head low and swaying, wings splayed.
