June 15 murder suspect waives right to speedy trial

The Morgan Hill man accused of killing his girlfriend and leaving her body near the railroad tracks behind their home June 15 was in court Tuesday for a general appearance on the charge of murder. Michael Sheppard, 61 of Morgan Hill, appeared at the South County Courthouse, handcuffed and wearing a Santa Clara County Jail jumpsuit, where he waived his right to a speedy trial. His next appearance in court is scheduled for Aug. 27 for a plea hearing. Sheppard is accused of killing his live-in girlfriend, Bertha Paulson, 46 of Morgan Hill, early in the morning June 15 at the couple’s home at the Morgan Hill Apartments complex in north Morgan Hill. According to police, Sheppard and Paulson were in a verbal fight that escalated to physical violence. During the fight, Paulson became unconscious and Sheppard was unable to revive her. Sheppard allegedly transported Paulson’s body to an area next to the Union Pacific railroad tracks behind the mobile home and apartment complex at 17880 Monterey Road and left her there, police said. Paulson was found about 9 a.m. June 15 by local residents walking their dog. She was found partially clothed, wearing only pants pulled down around her knees and a jacket placed over her upper body like a blanket.Morgan Hill police arrested Sheppard June 16, after he reportedly told officers he killed Paulson. Sheppard was arraigned June 19 on the charge of murder. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison, according to authorities. The incident is Morgan Hill’s first homicide of 2013, police said. In 2012, there were nine domestic violence related deaths in Santa Clara County.

Drunk drivers targeted this holiday

Independence Day is a dangerous holiday on account of the rampancy of drunk drivers out and about, according to the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department.  In hopes to prevent DUI accidents, police departments in Morgan Hill and Gilroy have teamed with other law enforcement agencies in the county to saturate the streets with patrol officers specifically hunting for drunk drivers on Friday, July 5.  Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.  

Trial date set for two suspects in 2011 drive-by killing

Two of the suspects accused of killing Morgan Hill teen Tara Romero in a 2011 drive-by shooting are scheduled to go to trial for murder in San Jose July 29, though that date is likely to be pushed back, according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Peter Waite.

Morgan Hill police briefs: Shoplifting, burglaries

Police catch suspected Walmart shoplifterA woman ran out of Wal-mart with a phone she had just stolen from the store at 170 Cochrane Plaza, but police caught up to her and recovered the stolen property, according to police reports. Police arrived to the scene and found the woman walking in the area of Butterfield Boulevard and Diana Avenue, police said. Walmart staff did not want to prosecute the woman, but wanted the stolen phone back. An officer gave the woman a warning to stay away from Wal-mart in the future or she could be prosecuted for trespassing, police said. The crime was reported about 2:34 p.m. June 27. Electronics, shotguns stolen from homeSomeone stole a laptop computer and Playstation video game system when they burglarized a home on Vista Del Valle in east Morgan Hill, police said. Also stolen from the home were two shotguns and an ATM card, according to police reports. The crime was reported about 7:33 p.m. June 27. The resident arrived at the home to find the back door open, then checked the home and determined what had been stolen, according to police. No arrests have been reported in relation to the burglary, according to police reports.  Stereo system stolen from parked vehicleSomeone stole a stereo system and speakers from a black Chevrolet Silverado parked on Cochrane Road Friday, police said. The crime was reported about 1:09 p.m., according to police. Passenger plane sited with laserThe crew of an incoming United Express commercial passenger jet reported someone pointed a green laser at the airplane from somewhere in the hills east of Morgan Hill, according to police. The disturbance was reported about 11 p.m. Friday, police reports said. The plane was flying at about 12,000 feet in altitude, inbound to the Mineta San Jose International Airport, police said. No injuries were reported. 

One man dead, woman seriously injured in motorcycle accident

Lisa Faria, a 49-year-old agent for Intero Real Estate in Gilroy, remains hospitalized after the motorcycle she was riding on as a passenger was involved in a fatal accident near Hollister.
