July 5 marks busiest day in County history for marriage licenses

The Santa Clara County Clerk Recorder’s office continues to see a growing demand for marriage licenses following last month’s court rulings that upheld same-sex unions in California, as the office issued more licenses Friday than any other day in County history, according to County staff.

UPDATED: More drunken driving suspects arrested during post-holiday weekend

Police throughout Santa Clara County reported Sunday they arrested 95 drunken driving suspects on the roads during Independence Day and the post-holiday weekend. Officers from 13 law enforcement agencies throughout the county made the arrests between Wednesday and Sunday night as part of the annual “Avoid the 13” holiday DUI crackdown, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputy Kurtis Stenderup. With the use of grant funds from the state and federal government, county police agencies during the DUI campaign use saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints during holiday weekends and other times when a higher-than-usual volume of motorists are on the roads, according to police. Funding for the Avoid the 13 campaign is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Administration, police said. Anyone may call 911 to report suspected impaired motorists.

Husband, wife don’t agree on what cheating means

DEAR ABBY: At what point is a relationship with a member of the opposite sex considered "cheating"? I have recently discovered that my husband was having a more-than-friendly relationship with a co-worker. He set up a post office box for her so she could write to him while she was away for an extended period.

Victim of bullying in school not ready to forgive

DEAR ABBY: I was bullied from second grade all through school. In junior high the abuse was both emotional and physical, and it happened on a daily basis. My parents' response was that maybe I was the problem -- and if I wasn't, people would stop picking on me. (That's a letter for another day.)

Teen gets a distant feeling from closest family members

DEAR ABBY: I'm 14 and for as long as I can remember, my family has never really been "together." We exist with each other physically, but have never connected in a loving way. I can't remember my father ever smiling at my mom or being happy. There seems to be an undercurrent of hostility or resentment in our relationships with each other. The lack of love in our house is palpable.

Morgan Hill police briefs: Burglary, fireworks

TheftTwo men reportedly stole 12 bottles of wine from the Safeway grocery store at 235 Tennant Station Tuesday afternoon. The suspected thieves, described as Asian males in their 20s, walked out of the store with the wine bottles about 4:30 p.m., according to police reports. No arrests or identification of the suspects have been reported. FireworksPolice reported more than a dozen calls from residents reporting their neighbors were shooting off fireworks throughout Morgan Hill the night of July 4. It does not appear that any of the offenders were cited or arrested for illegal fireworks, according to police reports. On one of the calls, a resident called police a second time after officers responded to warn the reported pyrotechnical scofflaws, according to police reports. The suspects reportedly began shooting fireworks again just after officers left the neighborhood. That incident was reported about 9:45 p.m. in the area of Via Loma. Police and fire personnel also reported two fires that might have been started by errant illegal fireworks - one next to U.S. 101 near Coyote Creek Golf Course, and one on Murphy Springs Court. BurglarySomeone broke into a home on the 18200 block of Hale Avenue and stole a computer and jewelry, police said. The burglar or burglars entered the home by forcing open a rear door, police said. The crime was reported about 12:07 a.m. Friday.

Crews respond to two July 4 grass fires, likely caused by fireworks

South County fire and EMS personnel responded to at least two vegetation fires July 4 that were likely ignited by unauthorized celebratory fireworks, but for the most part the Independence Day holiday didn't see any significant local fire or medical emergencies, according to authorities. CalFire responded to two grass fires near Morgan Hill Thursday night, according to CalFire Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke. One of the fires was just off the U.S. 101 north of Morgan Hill, near the Coyote Creek Golf Course, Leitzke said. That fire burned less than an acre of grass and vegetation. Crews also responded to a grass fire on Murphy Springs Drive in northwest Morgan Hill, which burned about an acre of vegetation before it was extinguished, Leitzke said. Both fires were caused by residents setting off “illegal fireworks,” but neither blaze resulted in significant damage or any injuries, Leitzke said. The City of Morgan Hill prohibits the display of fireworks, except in public displays that are authorized, permitted, and supervised by the fire chief, according to the City's municipal code. In Gilroy, where quieter so-called “safe and sane” fireworks are permitted for sale and display only during the Independence Day holiday, crews did not respond to any calls related to fireworks, according to Gilroy Fire Division Chief Colin Martin. That's not to say there was any shortage of celebration - “You could hear (fireworks) everywhere,” Martin said, but the revelry incited no unusual need for emergency services. “It was uneventful, which is good,” Martin said.
