National Night Out

Harried phone survey taker pleads for a little respect

DEAR ABBY: I'm hoping you will pass this on to your readers. Many of us these days have to work two jobs to make ends meet. In addition to a full-time job, I work a second one in a call center. Yes, I'm one of those dreaded people who call and ask you to do a phone survey.

Adopt Sasha

Sasha is a 7-year-old cat who is sweet and loves to relax in her basket. She is a little fearful, so she would be best as an only cat in an adult only home. She has been at the San Martin Animal Shelter since February. Interested? Call (408) 686-3900. Adoptions are free through the end of August.

Help is plentiful for military veterans going back to school

DEAR ABBY: This letter is for "Torn in Milford, Conn." I returned to college after 20 years of active duty and know firsthand how difficult the transition can be. Most universities have a veterans' service office where he might be able to connect with students with similar backgrounds and experiences to his. There should also be chapters of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars where he can meet others.

467 vehicles, zero DUIs at Morgan Hill checkpoint

Morgan Hill Police did not make any arrests on suspicion of DUI at a Friday night checkpoint just north of the downtown area, but officers contacted more than 200 drivers, according to Capt. Shane Palsgrove. The DUI and license checkpoint was conducted on Monterey Road at the intersection of Old Monterey Road. Although no drivers were suspected of driving under the influence, officers issued eight citations for unlicensed drivers, Palsgrove said. Officers also issued one citation for a driver with a suspended license, and that motorist’s vehicle was impounded, police said. Palsgrove added 467 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and 243 of those drivers were contacted by police. Of those contacted, 12 were screened at a “secondary” staging area. The purpose of the checkpoint was to ensure safety on the roads, and to educate drivers about the dangers of impaired driving, police said.

San Martin garbage fire burns about 100 tons of material

Crews from five area fire departments were up all night extinguishing a giant garbage fire at the San Martin Transfer Station Friday, according to authorities. The cause of the fire at the garbage and recycling facility at 14070 Llagas Avenue is undetermined, but investigators do not think it was intentional, according to CalFire Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke. The blaze burned in a pit of garbage and recyclable materials inside a roughly 5,000-square-foot metal building that is open on two sides to allow heavy equipment to sort through the discarded items for processing, Leitzke said. About 100 tons of garbage burned, but the fire only caused “minimal” damage to the building itself. Crews from CalFire, the South Santa Clara County Fire District, and the Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Jose fire departments worked through the night Friday and into Saturday morning to extinguish the fire, Leitzke said. The fire started just after 7 p.m. Friday. A firefighter injured his wrist while fighting the fire, Leitzke said. That was the only injury resulting from the incident. The San Martin Transfer Station is owned and operated by Recology South Valley. That company’s general manager, Phil Couchee, said they had to close the site to drop-offs from the public for a couple days, but they expect to reopen by Monday afternoon. “The firefighters did an outstanding job to contain (the fire) and manage it,” Couchee said.
