California grape growers set record in 2013
For the second year in a row, California’s grape harvest is expected to set a record. The Preliminary Grape Crush Report indicates the state crushed 4,685,075 tons of grapes in 2013, up 7 percent from the record set in 2012. Red wine varieties continue to account for the majority of production with 2,405,942 tons crushed statewide in 2013 and white wine varieties contributed 1,824,625 tons. A small amount of raisin grape and table grape varieties made up the remainder of grapes crushed for wine in California in 2013.

Couple new to Florida aren’t happy with gay neighbors
DEAR ABBY: My husband and I relocated to Florida a little over a year ago and were quickly welcomed into our new neighbors' social whirl. Two couples in the neighborhood are gay -- one male, one female. While they are nice enough, my husband and I did not include them when it was our turn to host because we do not approve of their lifestyle choices. Since then, we have been excluded from neighborhood gatherings, and someone even suggested that we are bigots!
Saving our wildlife from human harm
Call it the Circle of Life or Survival of the Fittest - wild animals in the wilderness die of starvation, diseases and predators. This is a natural part of life and most wildlife rehabilitators take a hands-off approach and let nature take its course. For instance, at Ano Nuevo I saw baby elephant seals lying on the beach in extreme distress. The ranger explained marine mammal organizations don't rescue these animals, as heartbreaking as the situation is. Instead, their mission is to rescue those creatures harmed due to human causes, such as caught in fishing nets and choked by plastic six-pack rings.
