Sacrifice or Gift?
In the Dalai Lama’s book The Art of Happiness, he discusses the constant position we are put in throughout our lives to make the “right choice.” He believes that making the right choice is often the difficult one to make and the one we don’t often make. He states, “that the right choice is often the difficult one – the one that involves some sacrifice of our pleasure.”
E-cigs to face same restrictions as tobacco in unincorporated areas
Starting later this summer, the use and sale of electronic smoking devices—or e-cigarettes—will be regulated the same as tobacco in unincorporated Santa Clara County. On June 10, the county’s Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance that adds the increasingly popular devices to the county’s tobacco control ordinances, according to the county press release. The changes include restricting e-cigarette sales near schools, banning smoking in common areas of multi-unit residents, and protecting the social norm advances related to tobacco use by restricting e-cigarette use in public places outside any city limits in Santa Clara County, according to a county press release. The new e-cigarette use restrictions will go into effect July 24.E-cigarette retailers will be required to obtain a local permit and follow the same rules as tobacco retailers, according to the press release. Currently, there are 24 tobacco retailers in unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County, of which nine sell e-cigarettes.“Santa Clara County has been a leader in protecting and promoting the public health and welfare of our communities, implementing some of the strongest second hand smoke ordinances in the nation,” Supervisor Ken Yeager said. “Electronic smoking devices emit toxic chemicals, lead to an increase in nicotine use, and entice youth to smoke at an early age. E-cigarettes threaten the County’s goal of promoting a healthy community.”Yeager brought the County’s tobacco ordinances to the Board of Supervisors, and is Chair of the Board’s Health and Hospital Committee. In March, the Board voted to add e-cigarettes to the County’s no-smoking policies for County facilities, leased properties, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and health clinics.E-cigarette restrictions will be added to the County’s three comprehensive measures, including the Smoking Pollution Control Ordinance, the Multi-Unit Residences Ordinance and the Tobacco Retailer Permit Ordinance, according to county staff. The use of electronic smoking devices will be restricted wherever smoking is prohibited by state or local law, which includes indoor and outdoor areas such as work sites, restaurants, bars and parks, according to the county release. The new county ordinance is a response to the growing use and popularity of e-cigarettes as an alternative to tobacco.“The lack of regulation and widespread availability of e-cigarettes nationwide have contributed to increasing social acceptance of e-cigarettes and the misperception that these products are somehow safe,” County Health Officer Sara Cody said. “E-cigarettes threaten to undo much of the social norm change around tobacco use, norm change that has undoubtedly saved lives, and largely resulted from policies like the ones implemented by the county.”A CDC study showed that, in 2011, 4.7 percent of all high school students had tried electronic smoking devices. By 2012, that figure had increased to 10 percent of all high school students. According to the County Public Health Department, there is growing evidence of potential health harms of smoking e-cigarettes such as cardiovascular disease and hypertension since they contain nicotine.

This is my favorite picture of my Dad and I. He has always been my hero, the one I want to be like as I “grow up.” As he handles the life changes and challenges that growing older brings with faith, grace and humor, he is ever more my hero and the one I want to be like! Thanks Dad, love you!
Harold Higginbottom
They say that father-daughter relationships are the hardest, and my dad and I are no exception. I once heard him tell my mom that he felt like he could not talk to me without me crying (and at the time, this was true). But in the end you get past all the hurt and the awkwardness, and underneath, the foundation of it all, is love.

On this Father’s Day, we want to take this time to honor our dad as we approach 20 years you have been gone.
Vice Mayor to embark on economic development expedition to China
Vice Mayor Marilyn Librers will travel to China this month on a mission to promote Morgan Hill as an ideal place for foreign companies to set up shop. Librers will be one of 12 Santa Clara Valley mayors and vice mayors selected by the Asian American Economic and Cultural Association to attend the economic development tour. Each traveler will be promoting their city as a place for Chinese companies to do business. The trip will last from June 16 to June 27, and the travelers will visit the Chinese cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Shenzhen. “I’ll be doing sales when I’m over there, to represent Morgan Hill and to entice companies to relocate to Morgan Hill,” Librers said. “One of Morgan Hill’s goals is to bring in employers (whose) employees can afford to live in our community.”A city staff report submitted by Mayor Steve Tate to the city council says the purpose of the trip is to “facilitate investment and international trade between China and the Silicon Valley region.” Librers was invited by trip co-sponsor the China Silicon Valley Foundation to submit an application to attend. During the approval process, Librers said she told the organizers that Morgan Hill has what Chinese companies are likely to look for when seeking cities in the U.S. to expand their operations—empty industrial space, vacant land on which to grow, affordable housing and a “reverse commute” to cities to the north. The itinerary for the trip includes meeting with local Chinese government officials and business owners, and “touring manufacturing facilities specific to what Morgan Hill is looking for,” Librers said. She will also visit Specialized Bicycle Components’ Shanghai facility. The corporate headquarters for Specialized are in Morgan Hill, on Concord Circle. Travel expenses for Librers and her fellow Silicon Valley officials are paid for by the nonprofit Asian American Economic and Cultural Association and the governments of the four cities they will visit. The city council June 4 approved sending up to $5,000 worth of promotional materials with Librers, such as business cards, an informational book on Morgan Hill, a contribution for plaques from the four cities on the tour and gifts to each city from Morgan Hill. Tate’s report to the council notes that Librers’ participation in the trip “will foster the city council’s goals of participation in regional (and, in this case, international) issues and will advance economic development in the city.”
Hunting Hollow 5K/10K Fun Run and Walk
Saturday, June 14--Don’t miss this beautiful trail run—the out-and-back course trail is a slight uphill on the way out with a few rollers along the way. As the description below states, it is “relatively flat,” but as I said, don’t be surprised by the rollers. This is a great little race with lots of energy from runners and volunteers. It is a nice introduction to trail running for those who have not done so. And for veteran trail runners, well, it is not a tremendous challenge in terms of technical running, but it is still a trail, and running in the woods is a great way to spend your morning. The out-and-back format actually works well—you can see exactly who is ahead of you and where you are in the race.
