Two community leaders join United Way board of directors

United Way Silicon Valley’s volunteer Board of Directors.
Dolly Sandoval, former Mayor of Cupertino, and Jessica Garcia-Kohl, director of development and public affairs at The Housing Trust of Santa Clara County, were recently elected to United Way Silicon Valley’s volunteer Board of Directors.

Sandoval served on the Cupertino City Council from 2001 to 2009 and was mayor in 2008. The Los Gatos High School math teacher has been actively involved in the community for more than 25 years in a number of capacities.

Currently, Sandoval is vice chair of the Advisory Council for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, a member of the El Camino Hospital Women’s Community Advisory Committee, and serves on the Board of Directors for Senior Housing Solutions. In 2009, she chaired the Valley Transportation Authority Board of Directors and was a member from 2006 to 2009. She served on the West Valley Community Services Board of Directors from 2002 to 2008, and was chair in 2007-2008. Sandoval was also a member of the Board of Directors for The Role Model Program from 1994 to 2008.

Garcia-Kohl has been director of development and public affairs for The Housing Trust since 2008. Before that, she served as senior policy analyst for San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed from 2007 to 2008 and chief of staff for San Jose Councilmember Sam Liccardo from 2006 to 2007.

She is a graduate of Leadership Morgan Hill and is a member of the Board of Directors for the YWCA of Silicon Valley. She is active in the community and serves on the Executive Committee of the Latino Report Card and as a reading mentor for the Yes We Can Read! program.

United Way Silicon Valley is leading a movement to improve community conditions by helping local people become financially stable and independent.
