I was appalled to see the treatment of Councilwoman Hedy Chang by some of her council colleagues at the last two meetings.
At the first, council members Larry Carr and Greg Sellers basically called her a liar, and Mayor Dennis Kennedy was, at best, condescending. When, after a very brief break, Ms. Chang brought out the minutes of a meeting from over a year ago that proved her point, I expected apologies to be offered. Instead, I saw these big brave council men either ignore the matter, or mumble that the whole thing was out of context. Shameful.
Especially since Ms. Chang was right all along, was able, on short notice, to back it up, and demonstrated that she, at least, was actually prepared to make an informed decision on the matter at hand.
At the last meeting, where I had hoped there would be an apology, Councilman Sellers sunk to such Machiavellian depths of innuendo and perfidy that I think even the late Bev Freeman might have cried, “Foul!” Well, if his performance at the previous meeting was shameful, then I must categorize councilman Sellers behavior at this meeting as reprehensible and vile.
Councilman Carr had the good sense to keep his mouth shut this time, but one might wonder if it was just because Carl Guardino hadn’t fed him his lines this week.
Mayor Kennedy, as his usual wont these days, claimed, essentially, that what while we might think we know what he said, what we believe we remember hearing him say wasn’t what he thought he intended to make us think he meant.
Councilman Steve Tate, while disagreeing with Ms. Chang as to the vote on the issue, was, and always has been as far as I know, a perfect gentleman.
Ms. Chang is owed an apology by Messrs. Kennedy, Carr and most especially Sellers. Period. And those three gentlemen need to look up misogyny in the Oxford unabridged and take a good long look at their shriveled little souls. What they started with their treatment of Cynthia Cook has gotten way out of hand with Ms. Chang and I, for one, will not stand for it.
