ANXIOUS TO SHOP AT TRADER JOE’S

“I would like to know when the Morgan Hill Trader Joe’s will open. Thank you.”

RED PHONE

When Trader Joe’s broke ground and started construction in June, it planned to open its doors just in time for Thanksgiving. That date has been pushed out to Dec. 8. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 8:30am and the doors will open to the anxious public at 9am.

STUCK AT THE RAILROAD CROSSING

“I was on my way home last night when I got stuck at the railroad crossing on Dunne Avenue for over 30 minutes! I would like to know if the city or railroad company knows about this and if there are any plans to get this fixed?”

RED PHONE

It certainly can be frustrating when you get in the position you described. The Red Phone contacted Wayne Horiuchi, corporate relation affairs for Union Pacific Railroad, to find out what to do when this happens. Horiuchi explains that the crossing arms are automatically lowered when the railroad crossing intersection loses power. This is a built-in safety feature in case of oncoming trains. Unfortunately, it is also a double-edged sword, since people may be tempted to drive around the barriers to cross the tracks.

Every railroad crossing has the national emergency hotline phone number listed on the control cabin, the large silver box located next to the crossing arms. This number, (800) 848-8715, will connect the caller to the main dispatch office in Omaha, Neb., and a local Union Pacific field representative will be immediately sent to resolve the issue. There is also a blue sign with a number code that should be relayed to the dispatcher. This indicates the exact location of the railroad crossing in question.
