Ahh the Fall. Falling leaves, cooling temperatures, and the sound of football fill the air. For your local eco-correspondent, however, the coming of the Fall means it’s time to provide Morgan Hillians with three important reminders.
First, we are proud to announce our 2nd Annual Halloween Costume Collection Event. From Nov. 1 – 4 and 7 – 11, you can bring your used Halloween costumes to the Community and Cultural Center and exchange them for a small prize. The costumes will be donated to a local nonprofit organization that will provide them to less-fortunate youth next year. This program gives you an opportunity to responsibly eliminate clutter, make a donation, and get a small prize in return. It’s also a great way to help local families without having to dig into your pocketbook.
Second, the shorter days, cooling temperatures, and coming rains mean that it is definitely time to scale back your irrigation schedule. If you haven’t done so already, you can probably cut down your irrigation by 50 percent for the months of October and November and then shut it off entirely for the Winter in December. Your plants don’t need as much water these days and you probably can think of many better ways to spend your money than on wasted water.
Third, the end of daylight savings time has also grown to signify the time that we should all change the batteries in our smoke alarms. By taking a few minutes today, you can dramatically increase your family’s safety by reducing their risk of perishing in a fire. This message is for you. If you have smoke alarms in your home, make sure that they are all working with fresh batteries. When you think about it, is there really a more important way to spend your time and money this weekend. Â
Eco-Fact of the Week: According to State Farm Insurance, there are more homes with smoke alarms that don’t work, than homes without any alarms. These poorly maintained units create a false sense of security for residents. Please change those batteries.

Anthony Eulo is a Program Administrator for the City of Morgan Hill who has already purchased new batteries for his smoke alarms. He welcomes your questions, comments, and thoughts and can be reached at 779-7247 or en*****@***********ca.gov .
