Thursday morning, three children were walking to school near the intersection of Alexander and Lewis streets, Sgt. Jim Gillio said. At least one of the students was then hit by a man driving a older faded tan or brown van or minivan. Nobody suffered more than minor injuries, and none of the injuries necessitated an ambulance or helicopter trip to the hospital.
The driver initially got out of the van after the accident, Gillio said. The man approached the children and asked, “Did I hit you guys?”
When the students replied that he had, the man jumped back in his vehicle and sped off, Gillio said. Witnesses described the man as white, in his early- to mid-40s, and about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with light brown hair and a medium build. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, and he spoke English fluently.
Police did not have a license plate number, but witnesses said the van was speckled with white spots, which some people described as primer spots, Gillio said.
Police did not immediately have the ages of the students or their current conditions.
