Morgan Hill – An 18-year-old Morgan Hill man was taken to Juvenile Hall Tuesday night after an alleged gang fight, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing.

Eduardo Ortiz was charged with allegedly fighting in public; he also had an outstanding juvenile warrant, with a no-bail clause.

Swing said Morgan Hill police Cpl. Shane Palsgrove and Reserve Officer Ken DeLuna were on patrol together Tuesday night when they spotted Ortiz and another teenager exchanging blows in the road near the intersection of Monterey Road and Ciolino Avenue.

Ortiz was taken down to the ground and arrested, Swing said, but the 16-year-old male he was fighting with ran from officers. Palsgrove pursued him on foot, but the teen got away, possibly by ducking into an apartment.

Once Ortiz was handcuffed and sitting in the back of the patrol car, Swing said, a 16-year-old female came up to try to talk to Ortiz. She apparently made a rude gesture with her hand at Ortiz, and she was arrested for allegedly resisting arrest and for possession of a deadly weapon after officers found two fixed-blade knives in her purse. She was cited and released to her parents.

According to Swing, Ortiz told officers he is a Sureño gang member and the teen he was fighting is a Norteño, and they fought because they are rivals.

No one was injured during the pursuit, and although Ortiz received a bump to his head during the fight, he did not need medical attention, Swing said.
