Week’s storms wreak havoc on local prep calendars
MORGAN HILL — The powerful storms that dumped about five inches of rain on the South Valley this week caused localized floods, traffic accidents a tornado warning and led to the cancellation or postponement of four prep sports events — and they weren’t all outdoor.

Live Oak wrestling became the latest casualty Wednesday, when Yerba Buena cancelled a West Valley Division dual it was scheduled to host against the Acorns because of a power outage. No make-up date has been announced.

“It’s a nightmare right now for all sports, especially when there’s no end in sight with this weather,” Live Oak athletic director Cummins said today. “Having grass fields, we’re in a real predicament. We’re spending our time trying to reschedule and finding out who’s got turf.”

The Outdoor Sports Center, Morgan Hill’s only artificially covered venue, is booked into next week. Live Oak boys soccer will host its next two matches — both in West Valley play — there against Silver Creek at 1 p.m. Saturday and Santa Teresa at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Wednesday at the Outdoor Sports Center, Sobrato hosted a Santa Teresa Division girls soccer match that Sobrato athletic director Kevin Miller would have cancelled if he heard about that afternoon’s tornado warning sooner. Sobrato postponed one event this week, moving Tuesday’s Santa Teresa boys soccer game at Westmont to 3:30 p.m. Friday.

“We really lucked out with the turf fields this week,” Miller said today. “No team has called about any other cancellations.”

Tuesday’s Mount Hamilton Division girls soccer match between the host Acorns and Leland will be made up at 3:15 p.m. Monday at Leland High. The teams swapped the location of their Feb. 12 meeting, which will be played in Morgan Hill. Live Oak plays host Leigh at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Wednesday, the first-place Acorns (6-1-3 overall, 4-0 league) were listed No. 12 in the first San Jose Mercury News top 15 girls soccer rankings. They are one of three local soccer teams that remained undefeated in league play this week, joining the Live Oak boys (2-2-6, 1-0-2) and Lady Bulldogs (4-1-5, 2-0-3), who will travel to Del Mar for a 3:15 p.m. match Friday.

Live Oak wrestling also is unbeaten in league duals at 3-0.
