Morgan Hill School Board trustees have scheduled a special meeting next week to consider employee layoffs in light of an anticipated $3.2 million budget shortfall in the district next year.

District staff has not determined how many teachers will have to be laid off to balance the budget.

Gov. Gray Davis has proposed a $5.2 billion budget cut in education funding statewide to take a sizable bite out of the estimated $34.6 billion state budget deficit.

The California Teachers Association and other educational groups and associations are protesting the cut.

March 15 is the deadline to notify certificated employees that they will not be needed next year.

According to the district, certificated employees include any employee with credentials, not only teachers. Principals, assistant principals, program directors, psychologists, librarians and nurses all are considered certificated employees.

District officials said the board will consider a “reduction of services relating to certificated employees” due to budget considerations. Trustees will consider information provided by district staff and make decisions on how many layoffs, if any, are necessary.

Last year, the district did not lay anyone off. There were approximately 18 fewer teachers, but Assistant Superintendent Denise Tate said those teachers were not needed because of a decline in enrollment and either retired or relocated or otherwise voluntarily left the district.

The meeting to make decisions on layoffs had been scheduled Monday but district staff was unable to complete all the necessary paperwork.

The Morgan Hill Board of Education regularly meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7 p.m. The special meeting on Monday, March 3, will be held at 6 p.m. in the District Office, 15600 Concord Circle. Details: 201-6023.
