Distance runners powered the Live Oak High track team at the
Tri-County Athletic League finals at Live Oak High Saturday.
Leading the way, as usual, for the Acorns was junior Cobbie Jones,
who cruised to victories in the 800 (2:18.19) and 1,600, beating
out league rival Amanda Boyd of Hollister-San Benito, and also
helped the 4×400 relay team to a third-place finish (4:26.74)
overall.
“I felt really nervous this morning. I don’t know why,” Jones
said. “But my mom said to just have fun. I wanted to enjoy every
step around the track.” Jones, who was ranked among the top 10 in
the Central Coast Section in four different events – the 400, 800,
1,600 and the 300 hurdles –
going into last weekend’s finals, will be among the favorites in
the 800 at the upcoming CCS meet at San Jose City College.

Jones, who was ranked among the top 10 in the Central Coast Section in four different events – the 400, 800, 1,600 and the 300 hurdles – going into last weekend’s finals, will be among the favorites in the 800 at the upcoming CCS meet at San Jose City College.

The CCS semifinals will be held on Saturday beginning at 9:30am, with the finals scheduled for the following Friday. The top three finishers in each event at the league finals automatically qualified for this weekend’s CCS semifinals.

Other top Acorn performers included: senior Billy Wong, who took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:30.41 and third in the 3,200 with a 10:21.18; senior Brandon Powell (2nd, 110 hurdles, 14.93), senior Jesus Atanacio (3rd, 800m, 2:01.43) and senior Tanya Tenorio (3rd, shot put, 32-02).

Meanwhile, Hollister-San Benito continued its all–around dominance on the track as its boys team won the overall team title with 132 points, edging out second-place Salinas (123) for the Haybalers’ third league title in four years. The Baler girls, who were just three points behind Salinas going into the final event, finished second behind the Cowboys.

Individually, Jesse Rice ran away with two league titles Saturday, in the 200 (22.62) and in the 400 (50.68). He was also a part of the 4×400 San Benito relay team that took third (3:37.61). Rigo Velasquez was the league champion in the 3,200 run.

In pole vault, Matt Wynne vaulted 14-00 to win the title, while Todd Merrigan (13-06) and Josh Schroder (13-06) finished third and fourth, respectively.

On the girls side, Boyd ran a dominant 3,200 race for first place with a time of 11:19.99, over 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, North Salinas’ Brenna Bauer (11:52.19). Boyd also took second in the 800 (2:22.04) and 1,600 (5:14.69) runs, trailing LO’s Jones in both events. Senior jumper Danielle Andrewson also had a big day. She earned the league title in the triple jump (35-09.75), and had second-place finishes in the high jump (5-00) and long jump (16-02). The Baler girls also swept the first two spots in the throwing events. Seniors Christina Osborne (119-11) and Johni Kiesewetter (111-07) finished first and second in discus and junior Jackie Perrien and (35-11.50) and freshman Lila Yodi (32-04.00) took the first two spots in shot put.

Gilroy was led by thrower Bobby Best, who defended his TCAL title in discus (155-09 feet) and took second in shot put (48-03.00 feet).
