The IRS, partnering with county community organizations, will provide free income tax assistance at a special Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site for low income, elderly, and disabled individuals, and persons with limited English proficiency on Aug. 12, 10am to 2pm, at Most Holy Trinity Church, 2040 Nassau Drive, in San Jose.
The center will become a ‘mega’ VITA site for the day, bringing 20 volunteer tax preparers from throughout the area to help individuals and families file tax returns for the past six years. A regular VITA site normally staffs two to four volunteer tax preparers.
A major reason why volunteer organizations are providing this service is to help individuals and families receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Many non-filers know they don’t have to file, but are unaware that they may be entitled to an EITC refund of up to $4,400 in 2005, or $12,000 for the last three years. Some mega site clients will have learned about EITC through financial aid workshops offered by the Silicon Valley\South Bay Saves Initiative.  Â
Parking available in lot next to school off Cunningham Avenue.
Federal and state tax return preparation will be available on a drop-in basis generally for persons with incomes below $38,000 for tax years 2000 through 2005. Current year 2005 tax returns will be electronically filed, and prior year tax forms will be computer-prepared and printed out for conventional mailing. For general federal tax information visit www.irs.gov or call 1 (800) 829-1040.
